Have you ever thought how young we’d be if we never ever went to school? A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Bye Bye Big Ocean (The End)

About Us

By Volume was formed in 2011 out of a realisation that music journalism needed to focus more on the music and less on the journalism. In recent months and years, celebrity culture has invaded music writing to the extent that it’s often difficult to tell whether you’re reading an album review or a gossip page. As a group of writers who have simply based our lives around music in one form or another, we felt it was time to do our bit to drag the discourse back towards what we find the most compelling and dynamic form of art and communication.

In October 2011 we released our first issue, a free download which talked about new records and explored bands and discographies in-depth. We built our tone around the idea of an amplified review, one which dared to engage with a piece of music as though it deserved thorough attention and not just casual appreciation.

Some way down the line, we’ve arrived in 2014 with the exact same outlook on music and music writing, only a little more shiny around the edges. We hope there are enough like-minded listeners for whom music is an enormous part of life. We’re pretty sure there are.
