If a little bell in your head rings at the sound of the name KW Griff, it’s because he was the man behind the bombastic Baltimore hit “Bring in the Katz”, which received exposure via an issue on theretro-futurist Night Slugs label back in 2012. It’s the type of track to grip you and ring all of the bells in your head and smack you into manic aberration. But forget about that for a moment ‘cause KW Griff just threw up a bunch of bootlegs on his SoundCloud account which you can go grab for free.

Some are tagged club, some tagged skate, and if you know Baltimore you know they’ll sample anything out there, but there is one track name that stands out: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – “I Have A Dream (KW Club Edit)”. Yep.

It’s only an edit, a tool to strike with shock and awe, and maybe gimmick. Maybe. It recognises as much though, bedding the immortalised speech with typical Griff breaks and perennially teetering on the edge of ecstatic chaos. Any sonic experimentation with the speech would be hard pressed to outshine MLK’s words with the music so it’s fitting to take a step back and let the man do his thing, sure to leave dance floors confused, bemused and amazed. Most importantly, it’s also reinforces clubs’ roots as a place to come together as one, and who better than Martin Luther King Jr. to remind us that it’s all love?
