Ex Hex are a trio out of the D.C. area, who later this year, will release their debut Rips on Merge. Their first single “Don’t Wanna Lose” joyously balances tinges of spacey prog and scuzzy garage rock with some palpable swagger. Simply put, the song goes for your gut. It’s a quick adrenaline jolt, but of the most sugary quality, grounded by some seriously deft drumming by Laura Harris.

“Don’t Wanna Lose” is a barnstormer of a song, but less a destructive personality, and more a jovial group of slightly inebriated party goers successfully crashing a wedding. An occasion that’s probably on a beach, as “Don’t Wanna Lose”‘s slick guitar riffs reek of classic surf rock, yet something about the song still feels distinctly of D.C. punk. There’s a reckless abandon which Ex Hex exude on “Don’t Wanna Lose”, but also this casual coolness — as if packaging up this much excitement into two(ish) minutes is no big deal. Maybe it’s not, maybe Ex Hex are just that good. But I think I’ll just settle on “Don’t Wanna Lose” being a perfect addition to any warm weather playlist and a good way to begin the send off of the summer season.
