Four Tet’s use of feminine vocals often instills a deep sense of compassion into his instrumental tracks, a sensuality that elevates his most resonant work. Our first taste of Beautiful Rewind, the amazingly titled “Parallel Jalebi” is a longing for intimacy left curiously out-of-reach. The percussive stutter launching the track is smeared with slippery R&B croons, glazing the surface with viscous desire, yearning that seems destined for chagrin. But the feeling is unwavering, in spite of the callous disregard on the receiving end. Hebden brings the tension to focus by cutting it out, employing a break passage to astounding effect: a lone bassline idles in place before the vocal loop resurfaces, faintly layering itself back to posture. There’s brevity in the reconstruction, yet no diminish in the spellbinding trance — his confidence is asserted through the music’s brisk arrangement. Hebden is a seasoned pro, and he leaves no space in his track to entertain otherwise. “Parallel Jalebi” is a stunning lead single that foreshadows the full statement of that fact.
