2013’s biggest curve ball has arrived and it’s a Miley Cyrus song. An obnoxious, euphoric, pulverizingly awful pop song, but the HOOKS! You’re fucking done when they etch their way into your soul. And so will the video, it’s a slice of pop-terror, a lurid middle finger to a lost childhood: confrontational, disorienting, misguided, and liberated. “We Can’t Stop” is bursting with the ecstasy of freedom, laughable in its defiance and incessantly grin-inducing. The soaring chorus is even a little moving, gliding with blissfully harmonized layers and transferring the joy of doing whatever the fuck you want. I’m about to use the s-word, and know fully well that I mean it. This song is sublime.
