If there’s one thing I’ve taken away from blasting “Talking Backwards” repeatedly for about half-an-hour: Real Estate thankfully are still Real Estate. Is this bad? No, I’m leaning towards it being the very best thing. If this tune is any indication, their luscious melodies and serene guitar riffs have only become more entrancing as the band continues to mature. Dreary eyed and completely engulfing, “Talking Backwards” is of that same band but the aftertaste is so much more refreshing.

I feel at times that, as an avid fan of twinkly, dreamy guitars, the shit gets played out. Real Estate have always been able to sashay around this apprehension though — they carry the aesthetics of bedroom pop almost gleefully, wrapping listeners in soft melodies that beguile the sometimes depressing lyrics. “Talking Backwards” offers that same aural king-sized down comforter of dreamy guitar rock, but it’s as if this bedspread is stuffed to a near-burst. And while we may have been told our entire lives that there can be too much of a good thing — this is not one of those cases. Fuck otherwise sound logic and just replay “Talking Backwards” over and over again.

And the only thing that really matters / is the one thing I can’t seem to do“, Martin Courtney coos almost dejectedly. “I might as well be talking backwards“, he emphasizes. Sure, I know it’s not directed towards us listeners, but I think Real Estate are doing all they need to keep us avidly attentive. We hear you loud and clear.
